

The King of Fighters XIII is one of the most beautiful 2D fighting games ever made and delivered smooth animations beside the typical KOF gameplay and lots of characters to choose from. The big part of what made me get into KoF in the first place was its looks-I've always thought the series had cooler characters than SF, and the sprites were simply works of art to me.

On a side note, I simply don't get why the stage in France is full of obese women.

But it ruined others for me-I just can't look at Joe, Takuma, Athena and Ikari warriors anymore. Unless Nonas work on XII got carried over to XIII. IMO, it had worked alright for some characters, like Mr. Wait what art did Nona do in XIII According to the game: Eisuke Ogura is the Illustrator. For example, I think in KoFXIII, Ralf and Clark look like big piles of muscles, while Yuri has no biceps whatsoever, and Maxima has a face of a yakuza boss. It was a significant departure from the more realistic look of the previous installments: Nona chose that cartoon-like grotesque art direction for the game, and personally I don't find it very appealing. On the other hand, I think some people will agree that this style just wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Also, most stages have amazing amounts of details and look really lively, like London for example, in a classic SNK style. They based them on 3D models, and shadowing and small details look simply amazing on the characters. Now I should admit that obviously, the artists put a hell of a lot of effort into making these sprites (drawing the for each individual character took around 17 months). So I was really disappointed by the art direction KoF XIII would adopt. Personally, I didn't like his previous work. However, SNK chose Nona, who was an art illustrator for KoF20 before.
